Final Flight of the Defiant

Updates? What updates? I'm not supposed to do this from work, so I haven't been updating as much as I used to. My bad. Not like anything has been going on.

Baby is healthy. Off the charts in size and weight, which we love. Looks like she's managing to hang on to her dad's blue eyes. Her hair is starting to come in, and it's starting to look like her mom's dark hair. Oh yeah, Kim's healed nicely.

We bought a house.

So what would cause me to post if these things didn't. Well, I'm afraid a sad day has come. A good friend of mine is about to pass into the great beyond. Yes, my friends, a certain 1995 Plymouth Neon (alternatively referred to as the Defiant) has seen better days.

It all started with my brother taking the car to Texas. Maybe I should blame the state. Regardless, it came back with the driver's side front tire in not so great shape. Not unexpected. So when it blew out on me driving to work (I'm fine, thanks for asking). I figured I'd pop the spare on and get it really fixed this weekend. Imagine my surprise when my massive strength broke the studs on the wheel, thus making it completely undrivable.

Allow me to sum up my feelings at this point. "Screw this."

So we bought a new car. Not exactly my first choice, but it had to be done. To be honest, I didn't trust carrying around my daughter in the Defiant (too much of a high profile target for rogue Jem'Hadar... bonus points if you laughed at that reference). I had simple requirements. Four wheels, engine, and air conditioning. Not that I couldn't live without air, but I wouldn't force my daughter.

So now I have a Rio, which I realized is appropriate since the only ship to actually survive all 7 seasons of Deep Space Nine was the Rio Grande. I thought about getting plates that said "Grande," but I figure people are either going to think I love my latte, or am compensating for something.

So it is with great sadness that I commit the "blue beast," as Dad called it, to the scrapyard. I know it will frolic with the other rust-ridden monsters and hope that its engine finds a new home. Lots of memories in that car, considering it was the car I learned to drive in. In a perfect world I'd love to have restored it, but alas.

So, for know the Defiant remains as Jean-Luc Picard said, "Adrift, but salvagable."
